November 10: Jim Lussier Members’ Choice Forum, K-12: Can the “Mississippi Miracle” be Replicated in Oregon?

The "Mississippi Miracle" refers to the state's dramatic transformation in K–12 education. Beginning in 2013, Mississippi rose from near-dead last in national rankings of student performance to the top half of the country. This systemic improvement was driven by an intense focus on literacy and targeted accountability.

Oregon ranks in the top 40% of states in per student spending on K-12 education yet consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of states in student performance metrics. Next year, Oregon’s legislature will be debating a package of reforms in the legislative session, with the goal of improving student outcomes within the reality of budget constraints. Many of the initiatives being considered are modeled on Mississippi’s success. In this forum, legislators and educators will discuss the initiatives under consideration, and how Oregon could get better outcomes by looking to proven successes in Mississippi and other states.
